Science STARTS Teachers

Science STARTS teachers are chosen for their interest in furthering the study of science in grades 4-8. The program helps small districts and schools create a cadre of leaders who are committed to helping their peers with the effective teaching of science.

Higher Education Partners

Science STARTS is fortunate to have several higher education partners who provide professional development, content development, facilities and other services.  These include the University of the Pacific, California State University Stanislaus, and Columbia College of California.

About Science STARTS
What is Science STARTS?

Science Technology Assistance for Rural Teachers and Small Districts is a regional California Math, Science Partnership Grant program funded by the California Department of Education and sponsored by the San Joaquin and Merced County Offices of Education.  The project helps teachers improve their teaching of science through professional development in science content, pedagogy, and leadership.

Science STARTS Requirements

STARTS teachers commit to take part in several professional development events revolving around science content , technology and pedagogy.  These include:

    STARTS Summer Institute
    Dinner with a Scientist
    State and local conferences
    Mentoring pre-service teachers
    Other training events

Teachers receive training on aligning instruction to state standards using the  Curriculum Mapping strategy.  All units taught are aligned using this method.

Finally, cluster teams meet four times a year to discuss progress on curriculum alignment and to complete a project of their own design.
